Target Information
Heterotrimeric G proteins relay signals from cell surface receptors to intracellular effectors. Each receptor detects specific extracellular stimuli such as photons, pheromones, odorants, hormones, or neurotransmitters, while effectors like adenyl cyclase generate intracellular messengers. In mammals, G protein alpha, beta, and gamma subunits are encoded by at least 16, 4, and 7 genes, respectively. The Gi class includes alpha subunits modified by pertussis toxin, such as Galpha i-1, i-2, i-3, o, t1, t2, z, and gust, which function to open atrial potassium channels.
