Target Information
Beta-2-microglobulin (B2M) is a 12–14 kDa protein that forms part of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I. It is associated with HLA Class I antigens expressed on lymphocytes, thymocytes, monocytes, granulocytes, platelets, endothelial and epithelial cells, but absent on erythrocytes.
B2M is also found freely in plasma and has an amino acid sequence homologous to immunoglobulin constant regions, forming a beta-pleated sheet structure.
The protein is involved in antigen processing and presentation, TCR signaling, and CD8+ cell activation.
Encoded by the B2M gene on chromosome 15, mutations can cause hypercatabolic hypoproteinemia.
B2M levels are useful for assessing renal function and serve as a prognostic marker in HIV infection.
