Target Information
Beta-2-microglobulin (B2M) is a 12–14 kDa protein that forms part of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I. It is expressed on lymphocytes, thymocytes, monocytes, granulocytes, platelets, endothelial and epithelial cells, but absent on erythrocytes.
The protein is also found freely in plasma and shares homology with immunoglobulin constant regions, having a beta-pleated sheet structure.
B2M is involved in antigen processing and presentation, TCR signaling, and downstream signaling in naive CD8+ cells.
Encoded by the B2M gene on chromosome 15, mutations can cause hypercatabolic hypoproteinemia.
Beta-2 microglobulin levels are used to assess renal function in kidney transplant recipients and serve as a prognostic marker for HIV infection.
