Target Information
Defensins are a family of microbicidal and cytotoxic peptides involved in host defense. They are abundant in neutrophil granules and present in mucosal epithelia such as the intestine, respiratory tract, urinary tract, and vagina. Members share a conserved cysteine motif and high sequence similarity. The encoded protein, defensin alpha 1, is found in neutrophil granules and contributes to phagocyte-mediated host defense. Several alpha defensin genes are clustered on chromosome 8, with DEFA1 differing from DEFA3 by one amino acid. Both genes exhibit copy number variation.
