Target Information
Defensin alpha-1 belongs to a family of antimicrobial and cytotoxic peptides involved in host defense. Defensins are abundant in the granules of neutrophils and in mucosal epithelial tissues such as the intestine, respiratory tract, urinary tract, and vagina. Members of this family share high sequence similarity and a conserved cysteine motif. The Defensin alpha-1 protein, encoded by the DFA1 gene, plays a role in phagocyte-mediated host defense. Several alpha-defensin genes are clustered on chromosome 8, and Defensin alpha-3 differs from Defensin alpha-1 by only one amino acid. Both genes exhibit copy number variation, and two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
