Target Information
Placental Alkaline Phosphatase (PLAP) plays a key role in regulating specific inflammatory processes. There are four related alkaline phosphatases: intestinal, placental, placental-like, and liver/bone/kidney types. PLAP is a membrane-bound isoenzyme (Regan and Nagao type) expressed in the placenta during the third trimester of gestation and is a useful marker for identifying testicular germ cell tumors.
Unlike germ cell tumors, PLAP-positive somatic cell tumors uniformly express epithelial membrane antigen (EMA).
A proposed function of PLAP is matrix mineralization; however, mice lacking functional PLAP exhibit normal skeletal development.
PLAP has been linked to hypophosphatasia, a disorder characterized by hypercalcemia and skeletal defects, with severity depending on specific mutations.
For Research Use Only. Not for use in diagnostic procedures. Not for resale without express authorization.
