Protein Kinase C (PKC)는 다양한 세포 신호 전달 과정에서 중요한 조절 역할을 하는 다기능 단백질 키나아제입니다. PKC는 칼슘과 인지질에 의존적인 효소로, 최소 10가지 이상의 isoform이 존재하며 conventional, novel, atypical isoform으로 분류됩니다 (Ohno and Nishizuka, 2002).
PKC는 CaM Kinase II 및 PKA와 함께 세포 내 2차 신호전달 매개 효소 중 하나로, 신경전달물질 합성 및 분비, 유전자 발현, 이온 채널 기능, 시냅스 가소성 등 다양한 세포 기능을 조절합니다 (Lu et al., 1999; Grosshans et al., 2002; Nishizuka, 1995).
PKC의 촉매 단편(PKC-M)은 Ca²⁺ 또는 phosphatidylserine이 없어도 활성을 유지합니다.
