Target Information
Upf1 is a key component of the nonsense-mediated decay (NMD) pathway, an mRNA surveillance mechanism in eukaryotic cells that degrades transcripts containing premature termination codons. It functions as an ATP-dependent RNA helicase in the cytoplasm and is associated with P-bodies. Phosphorylation of Upf1 mediates translation repression during NMD, facilitating mRNA access to the decay machinery. Other NMD components include Upf2 and Upf3, which localize to perinuclear and nucleocytoplasmic regions, respectively.
