Target Information
The SMN1 gene is part of a 500 kb inverted duplication on chromosome 5q13. This duplicated region includes multiple genes and repetitive elements, making it prone to rearrangements and deletions. The telomeric and centromeric copies of this gene encode the same survival motor neuron protein, which plays a catalytic role in assembling small nuclear ribonucleoproteins—the building blocks of the spliceosome. Mutations in SMN1 are known to cause spinal muscular atrophy types 1 and 2.
