Target Information

Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) is a proinflammatory cytokine expressed by monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. It is synthesized as a 31 kDa inactive pro-form that is cleaved into a 17 kDa active protein upon inflammasome activation. This cleavage is mediated by active caspase-1, which processes pro-IL-1β into its mature form. IL-1β is secreted via a non-classical pathway and signals through IL-1RI and IL-1RII receptors, shared with IL-1α. IL-1β plays a crucial role in innate immune responses, promoting the production of other proinflammatory cytokines and acute-phase responses. Elevated IL-1β levels are associated with chronic inflammatory diseases, and IL-1β neutralizing antibodies have potential therapeutic applications.
