Target Information
IFN gamma (Interferon gamma, Type II interferon) is a macrophage activation factor and immune interferon produced primarily by T-lymphocytes and natural killer cells in response to antigens, mitogens, Staphylococcus enterotoxin B, phytohemagglutinin, and other cytokines.
It is a dimeric glycoprotein composed of two 146 amino acid subunits, forming a functional homodimer of approximately 45 kDa. On SDS-PAGE, IFN gamma appears as bands of 25, 20, and minor 15.5 kDa due to differential glycosylation.
The biological activity of IFN gamma is species-specific; human IFN gamma does not cross-react with mouse IFN gamma.
Functions include antiviral and tumor antiproliferative activity, induction of class I and II MHC, macrophage activation, and enhancement of immunoglobulin secretion by B lymphocytes.
Activation occurs through binding to IFN gamma receptor I and II, triggering the JAK-STAT pathway.
Human IFN gamma shares approximately 40% sequence homology with mouse IFN gamma and is upregulated by IL-2, FGF basic, and EGF, while downregulated by vitamin D3 or DMN. Gene mutations are associated with aplastic anemia.
