Target Information
Beta-catenin is an adherens junction (AJ) protein involved in cell-cell adhesion and signal transduction. It interacts with E-cadherin and alpha-catenin to anchor cell adhesion complexes to the actin cytoskeleton. Additionally, beta-catenin associates with the adenomatous polyposis coli protein and microtubules, participating in Wnt/Wingless signaling pathways that regulate morphogenesis.
Beta-catenin is expressed in hair follicle cells, basal and matrix cells, and outer/inner root sheath cells. Dysregulation of beta-catenin has been linked to pilomatrixoma, medulloblastoma, colorectal, ovarian, and other cancers. In the nucleus, it acts as a co-activator for Lef/Tcf transcription factors, promoting expression of genes such as cyclin D and c-myc that drive cell proliferation and tumorigenesis.
