Phosphorylated serine (phosphoserine) is an alpha amino acid that, together with phosphothreonine, is one of the most ubiquitously modified amino acids in proteins. Many hormones, such as adrenaline (epinephrine), alter enzyme activities by stimulating phosphorylation of serine and threonine, which profoundly affects cellular signal transduction, apoptosis, and carcinogenesis.
