Target Information
Ribosomes catalyze protein synthesis and consist of small (40S) and large (60S) subunits composed of RNA species and distinct proteins. The RPS6 gene encodes a cytoplasmic ribosomal protein, a component of the 40S subunit, belonging to the S6E family. RPS6 is a major substrate for protein kinases, with phosphorylation at multiple C-terminal serine residues induced by growth factors and mitogens. Dephosphorylation occurs during growth arrest. This protein contributes to cell growth and proliferation by regulating translation of specific mRNA classes. Multiple processed pseudogenes of this gene are dispersed throughout the genome.
