Target Information
Muscarinic cholinergic receptor 2 (CHRM2) is an acetylcholine receptor that functions as a presynaptic autoreceptor inhibiting acetylcholine release. The M2 receptor is also involved in smooth muscle contractility.
In Alzheimer’s disease, selective loss of M2 subtype receptors occurs in cortical and hippocampal regions of the human brain. Increased M2 receptor heterozygosity has been associated with depression in women.
The M2 receptor is expressed in various brain regions including the cerebellum, cerebral cortex, hippocampus, medulla, striatum, and thalamus, as well as in lung and prostate tissues.
