Target Information
The Urotensin-II receptor is highly expressed in the heart and pancreas, and also in artery and smooth muscle. Low transcript levels are found in the brain, particularly in the thalamus and superior occipital gyrus.
G-protein Coupled Receptors (GPCRs) are one of the largest families of signaling molecules, sharing a structural motif of seven membrane-spanning helices. They exist in active and inactive forms, and their conformation changes upon ligand binding, leading to downstream signaling via G-proteins.
Regulation of GPCR activity has significant physiological implications and remains a major focus of pharmacological research. Examples of GPCR-targeted drugs include Zyprexa (Eli Lilly) and Claritin (Schering-Plough).
