Target Information
A reciprocal translocation between chromosomes 22 and 9 produces the Philadelphia chromosome, commonly found in chronic myelogenous leukemia. The chromosome 22 breakpoint occurs within the BCR gene, producing a BCR-ABL fusion protein encoded by sequences from both BCR and ABL (chromosome 9).
While the BCR-ABL fusion protein has been well studied, the normal BCR gene product’s function remains unclear. It exhibits serine/threonine kinase activity and functions as a GTPase-activating protein for p21rac. Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified for this gene.
