Target Information
BCL-2 is a key regulator of apoptosis that functions to either inhibit or promote cell death. The BCL-2 family members can form dimers to modulate apoptosis. For example, Bag1 forms a heterodimer with BCL-2, enhancing its anti-apoptotic effect. Bax and Bak play critical roles in cytochrome c release from mitochondria, initiating apoptosis. Overexpression of BCL-2 is associated with cancers such as follicular lymphoma and prostate cancer. Two transcript variants of BCL-2 differ at their C-terminal ends due to alternative splicing.
