Target Information
CD14 is a 55 kDa GPI-anchored glycoprotein constitutively expressed on the surface of mature monocytes, macrophages, and neutrophils. It acts as a multifunctional lipopolysaccharide receptor and exists in both membrane-bound and soluble forms. CD14 binds lipopolysaccharides in a reaction catalyzed by lipopolysaccharide-binding protein (LBP), playing a role in immune response modulation. Soluble sCD14 can distinguish structural differences among lipopolysaccharides and contributes to serum detoxification. CD14 also binds apoptotic cells and is involved in allergic, inflammatory, and infectious processes. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding the same isoform. Dysfunction of CD14 is associated with diseases such as Mycobacterium chelonae infection and croup.
