Target Information
CD14 is a 55 kDa GPI-anchored glycoprotein expressed on the surface of mature monocytes, macrophages, and neutrophils. It functions as a multifunctional lipopolysaccharide (LPS) receptor and is released to serum as both secreted and cleaved forms. CD14 binds LPS in a reaction catalyzed by lipopolysaccharide-binding protein (LBP), aiding in neutralization of serum lipopolysaccharides. Soluble CD14 (sCD14) can discriminate structural differences between LPS molecules and participates in immune responses, including allergic, inflammatory, and infectious processes. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding the same isoform. CD14 dysfunction has been associated with Mycobacterium chelonae infection and croup.
