Target Information
CD14 is a 55 kDa GPI-anchored glycoprotein expressed on mature monocytes, macrophages, and neutrophils. It functions as a multifunctional lipopolysaccharide receptor and exists both as a membrane-bound and soluble form. CD14 binds lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in association with lipopolysaccharide-binding protein (LBP), contributing to immune response modulation. Soluble CD14 (sCD14) can distinguish structural differences between LPS molecules and plays a role in neutralizing foreign LPS in serum. Additionally, CD14 interacts with apoptotic cells and influences allergic, inflammatory, and infectious processes. Alternative splicing generates multiple transcript variants encoding the same CD14 isoform. CD14 dysfunction is associated with diseases such as Mycobacterium chelonae infection and croup.
