Target Information
The c-Myc protein is a 62 kDa transcription factor encoded by the c-Myc gene on human chromosome 8q24. It is frequently activated in various tumor cells and plays critical roles in cellular proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, and cell cycle progression.
Phosphorylation at Thr58/Ser62 by kinases such as glycogen synthase kinase 3, cyclin-dependent kinase, ERK2, and JNK is associated with regulation of cell proliferation and cycle control.
c-Myc is essential for vasculogenesis and angiogenesis in tumor development. Deregulated expression of c-Myc induces apoptosis in different cell types.
Antibodies against c-Myc epitopes recognize overexpressed proteins containing Myc epitope tags fused to terminal regions of target proteins.
Amplification of c-Myc has been found in lung, breast, and colon carcinomas, while N-Myc amplification is linked to neuroblastomas.
Translocation of c-Myc on chromosome 8 to immunoglobulin loci (chromosomes 14, 2, or 22) is characteristic of Burkitt’s lymphoma and other B-cell lymphoproliferative conditions.
Aberrant c-Myc expression occurs in tumors of multiple origins, including colorectal, gastric, hepatic, mammary, ovarian, pulmonary, prostatic, thyroidal, and hematopoietic neoplasms.
