Target Information
The c-Myc protein is a 62 kDa transcription factor encoded by the c-Myc gene on human chromosome 8q24. It is commonly activated in various tumor cells and plays a critical role in cellular proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, and cell cycle progression.
Phosphorylation of c-Myc at Thr58/Ser62 by kinases such as glycogen synthase kinase 3, cyclin-dependent kinase, ERK2, and JNK is associated with cell proliferation and regulation.
c-Myc is essential for vasculogenesis and angiogenesis in tumor development. The c-myc oncogene (p62 c-myc) regulates normal cellular proliferation and differentiation, and its deregulated expression can induce apoptosis.
Antibodies against c-Myc epitopes recognize overexpressed proteins containing Myc epitope tags fused to either the amino- or carboxy-terminus of target proteins. c-Myc, N-Myc, and L-Myc encoded proteins are involved in cell proliferation, differentiation, and neoplastic processes.
Amplification of the c-Myc gene occurs in several human tumors such as lung, breast, and colon carcinomas. N-Myc amplification is observed in neuroblastomas. Translocation of the c-myc locus on chromosome 8 to immunoglobulin loci on chromosomes 14, 2, or 22 is characteristic of Burkitt’s lymphoma and other B-cell lymphoproliferative disorders. Aberrant c-Myc expression is also found in colorectal, gastric, hepatic, mammary, ovarian, and various other tumor types.
