Target Information
The SMAD1 protein belongs to the SMAD family, homologous to Drosophila mothers against decapentaplegic (Mad) and C. elegans Sma. SMAD proteins act as signal transducers and transcriptional modulators mediating multiple signaling pathways.
SMAD1 mediates bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signals involved in cell growth, apoptosis, morphogenesis, development, and immune response. Upon BMP ligand binding, SMAD1 is phosphorylated by BMP receptor kinase and forms a complex with SMAD4 for transcriptional regulation.
SMAD1 is targeted by SMAD-specific E3 ubiquitin ligases (SMURF1, SMURF2) for ubiquitination and proteasome-mediated degradation. Alternative splicing variants encoding the same protein have been observed.
