Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the SMAD family, which includes proteins similar to Drosophila Mad and C. elegans Sma. SMAD proteins act as signal transducers and transcriptional modulators mediating multiple signaling pathways. SMAD1 mediates BMP (Bone Morphogenetic Protein) signaling, which regulates cell growth, apoptosis, morphogenesis, development, and immune responses. Upon BMP ligand binding, SMAD1 is phosphorylated and forms a complex with SMAD4 to regulate transcription. It is also targeted by SMAD-specific E3 ubiquitin ligases (SMURF1, SMURF2) for ubiquitination and proteasomal degradation. Alternative splicing variants encoding the same protein have been observed.
