Target Information
TOP2B (DNA Topoisomerase II Beta) is a protein-coding gene encoding a DNA topoisomerase enzyme that controls and alters the topologic states of DNA during transcription. This nuclear enzyme participates in chromosome condensation, chromatid separation, and relief of torsional stress during DNA transcription and replication. It catalyzes transient breaking and rejoining of duplex DNA strands, allowing strand passage and topological changes.
Two forms of this enzyme exist due to gene duplication:
- Beta form: localized to chromosome 3
- Alpha form: localized to chromosome 17
This gene is a target for several anticancer agents, and mutations are associated with drug resistance. Reduced activity may contribute to ataxia-telangiectasia. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
