Target Information
This gene encodes class IV alcohol dehydrogenase 7 mu or sigma subunit, a member of the alcohol dehydrogenase family. These enzymes metabolize a wide variety of substrates, including ethanol, retinol, other aliphatic alcohols, hydroxysteroids, and lipid peroxidation products. The encoded enzyme is inefficient in ethanol oxidation but highly active as a retinol dehydrogenase, suggesting a role in retinoic acid synthesis, important for cellular differentiation. Expression is much higher in stomach tissue than in liver, distinguishing it from other family members.
