Target Information

Glucagon plays a key role in glucose metabolism and homeostasis. It regulates blood glucose by increasing gluconeogenesis and decreasing glycolysis. As a counterregulatory hormone of insulin, it raises plasma glucose levels in response to insulin-induced hypoglycemia. GLP-1 and GLP-2 have distinct physiological roles: GLP-1 stimulates glucose-dependent insulin release and suppresses plasma glucagon, while GLP-2 promotes intestinal growth and enhances nutrient absorption. GLP-2 increases villus height, crypt cell proliferation, and intestinal glucose transport while reducing mucosal permeability and enterocyte apoptosis. The gastrointestinal tract is the principal target of GLP-2 action, contributing to nutrient homeostasis and intestinal mucosal health.
