GCG, also known as GLP1 or Glucagon, is a 29-amino acid pancreatic hormone that counteracts insulin by stimulating glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis. It is mapped to chromosome 2q36–2q37.
GLP1 (also known as 7–37) is part of the preproglucagon molecule and enhances pancreatic beta-cell glucose competence. It is a potent insulin secretagogue and plays a key role in the enteroinsular axis, explaining why plasma insulin levels are higher after oral glucose intake compared to intravenous administration.
