Target Information
Upf1 is an active component in nonsense-mediated decay (NMD), an mRNA surveillance mechanism in eukaryotic cells that degrades mRNAs containing premature termination codons. It functions as an ATP-dependent RNA helicase in the cytoplasm and is also a component of cytoplasmic P-bodies. Upf1 phosphorylation mediates translation repression accompanying NMD, facilitating mRNA accessibility to the NMD machinery. Other NMD components, Upf2 and Upf3, exhibit perinuclear and nucleocytoplasmic localization, respectively.
