Target Information
Beta-catenin is an adherens junction (AJ) protein involved in cell-cell adhesion and epithelial layer maintenance. It interacts with E-cadherin and alpha-catenin to anchor adhesion complexes to the actin cytoskeleton. Beta-catenin also associates with cytoskeletal complexes containing adenomatous polyposis coli protein and microtubules, participating in signaling pathways such as Wnt/Wingless, tyrosine kinases, and phosphatases.
The protein is expressed in various hair follicle cell types and epithelial tissues. Aberrant beta-catenin activity is implicated in pilomatrixoma, medulloblastoma, colorectal, ovarian, and other solid tumors. In the nucleus, beta-catenin co-activates Lef/Tcf transcription factors, stimulating genes like cyclin D and c-myc that promote cell proliferation, linking it to tumorigenesis.
