Product Specific Information
This antibody reacts with an extracellular epitope of CD21 (CR2), a 145 kDa transmembrane glycoprotein (complement C3d receptor - C3dR) expressed on B lymphocytes, follicular dendritic cells, some epithelial cells and subsets of T lymphocytes. It is not expressed on immature B cells.
Target Information
CD21 (complement receptor 2, CR2, C3D receptor, EBV receptor) binds C3 complement fragments, especially its breakdown fragments, which remain covalently attached to complement activating surfaces or antigens.
It plays a crucial role in:
- Uptake and retention of immunocomplexes
- Survival of memory B cells
- Development and maintenance of humoral immune response
CD21 also serves as a receptor for Epstein-Barr virus and is involved in prion targeting and neuroinvasion. A soluble form (sCD21) retains ligand-binding ability. CD21 associates with CD19, CD81, and Leu13 forming a signal-transduction complex for B cell activation. Genetic variations are linked to systemic lupus erythematosus type 9 (SLEB9).
