Target Information

Tryptase gamma, also known as serine protease 31 or transmembrane tryptase, is an enzyme encoded by the TPSG1 gene in humans.
Tryptases are a family of trypsin-like serine proteases (peptidase family S1) and are enzymatically active only as heparin-stabilized tetramers. They are resistant to all known endogenous proteinase inhibitors.

Several tryptase genes are clustered on chromosome 16p13.3, including four functional genes: alpha I, beta I, beta II, and gamma I.
Beta I has an allelic variant alpha II, beta II has beta III, and gamma I has gamma II.
Beta tryptases are mainly expressed in mast cells, while alpha-tryptases predominate in basophils.

This gene differs from other members of the tryptase family by having a C-terminal hydrophobic domain that may serve as a membrane anchor.
Tryptases have been implicated as mediators in the pathogenesis of asthma and other allergic and inflammatory disorders.
