Target Information
Beta-catenin is an adherens junction (AJ) protein involved in cell-cell adhesion and signaling. It interacts with E-cadherin and alpha-catenin, linking the adhesion complex to the actin cytoskeleton. Beta-catenin also associates with APC and microtubules, influencing Wnt/Wingless signaling pathways.
It plays crucial roles in morphogenesis and is expressed in various hair follicle cell types. Pathological involvement includes pilomatrixoma, medulloblastoma, colorectal, ovarian, and other cancers. In the nucleus, beta-catenin co-activates Lef/Tcf transcription factors, promoting expression of genes such as cyclin D and c-myc that drive cell proliferation.
These functions highlight its significance in tumorigenesis across breast, colon, liver, lung, gastric, prostate, and skin tissues.
