Target Information
The S100A8/A9 heterocomplex, also known as MRP-8/MRP-14 complex or calprotectin, constitutes approximately 60% of the cytoplasmic protein fraction of circulating polymorphonuclear granulocytes. It is also found in monocytes, macrophages, and ileal tissue eosinophils.
Peripheral blood monocytes carry the antigen both extra- and intracellularly, whereas neutrophils only intracellularly. The S100A8/A9 complex exhibits antibacterial, antifungal, immunomodulating, and antiproliferative effects, and serves as a potent chemotactic factor for neutrophils.
Elevated plasma concentrations are associated with diseases involving increased neutrophil activity, such as inflammatory bowel disease. Calprotectin can also be detected in feces due to granulocyte transmigration through the intestinal wall. Increased levels have been reported in plasma, saliva, gingival crevicular fluid, stools, and synovial fluid during infections and inflammatory conditions.
