PAX8 유전자는 paired box 전사 인자 계열에 속하며, paired box domain, octapeptide, paired-type homeodomain을 포함하는 단백질을 암호화합니다. 이 핵 단백질은 갑상선 여포 세포 발달 및 갑상선 특이적 유전자 발현에 관여합니다. 해당 유전자의 돌연변이는 갑상선 형성 이상, 여포성 갑상선암, 비정형 여포성 갑상선 선종과 관련이 있습니다. 다양한 전사체 변이체가 보고되어 있습니다.
