PAX8 유전자는 paired box family의 전사 인자 중 하나로, paired box domain, octapeptide, paired-type homeodomain을 포함하는 단백질을 암호화합니다. 이 핵 단백질은 갑상선 여포 세포의 발달 및 갑상선 특이 유전자 발현에 관여합니다. 해당 유전자의 변이는 갑상선 발육 이상, 갑상선 여포암 및 비정형 여포성 갑상선 선종과 관련이 있습니다. 다양한 isoform을 암호화하는 대체 스플라이싱 전사체가 보고되었습니다.
