Target Information

The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the E2F family of transcription factors. The E2F family plays a crucial role in cell cycle control and the action of tumor suppressor proteins, and is also a target of transforming proteins of small DNA tumor viruses.
E2F proteins contain conserved domains including:

  • DNA binding domain
  • Dimerization domain (interacts with DP proteins)
  • Transactivation domain enriched in acidic amino acids
  • Tumor suppressor protein association domain within the transactivation domain

E2F1, E2F2, and E2F3 also have an additional cyclin binding domain. E2F1 binds preferentially to retinoblastoma protein (pRB) in a cell cycle–dependent manner and mediates both cell proliferation and p53-dependent or independent apoptosis.
