Target Information
Organic cation transporters (OCT) are expressed in the plasma membrane of epithelial cells from various tissues and function in the elimination of endogenous amines, cationic drugs, and other xenobiotics.
OCTs have a 12-transmembrane-domain structure and a large extracellular hydrophilic loop.
- OCT1: Primarily expressed in the liver
- OCT2 (SLC22A2): Expressed in kidney distal and proximal tubules; mediates pH-sensitive tubular uptake of organic compounds
- OCT3: Found in placenta, skeletal muscle, prostate, aorta, and liver
An additional splice variant exists for OCT2, known as OCT2-A.
