Target Information
Leukocytes adhere to the blood vessel endothelium during extravasation in postcapillary venules of lymph nodes. Leukocyte adhesion also occurs in capillaries and small venules throughout the body after the onset of inflammation. This immediate response involves a cascade of adhesion receptors, including selectins and immunoglobulin superfamily members at the endothelial surface.
E-selectin (CD62E) is an endothelial cell-specific selectin expressed only after activation with proinflammatory cytokines. In vitro studies show IL-1, TNFα, and bacterial components such as lipopolysaccharides induce E-selectin transcription via an NFκB-dependent signaling cascade. E-selectin is associated with endothelial cells in various inflammatory contexts.
