Target Information
Anthrax toxin is a three-protein exotoxin secreted by virulent strains of Bacillus anthracis, the causative agent of anthrax. It is composed of:
- Protective antigen (PA): a cell-binding protein
- Edema factor (EF) and Lethal factor (LF): enzyme components
These components assemble and are endocytosed by target cells. In the endosome, LF and EF translocate into the cytoplasm, disrupting immune cell signaling, migration, and potentially inducing cell lysis, particularly in macrophages. Anthrax toxin enables the bacteria to evade immune defenses, proliferate, and cause host death.
Research on anthrax toxin provides insights into macromolecular assembly, protein translocation, pore formation, and endocytosis mechanisms.
