Target Information

CD34 is a highly glycosylated monomeric surface protein (111–115 kDa) expressed on various stem cell populations. It serves as a stem cell marker, with reversible expression on human hematopoietic stem cells. CD34 may function as a receptor involved in endocytosis and regulation of adhesion, differentiation, and proliferation of hematopoietic progenitors.

CD34 possibly acts as an adhesion molecule facilitating stem cell attachment to the bone marrow extracellular matrix or stromal cells. It may also serve as a scaffold for glycans binding to lectins on stromal components and contribute to selectin-mediated interactions. The intracellular domain is phosphorylated by protein kinase C, indicating a potential role in signal transduction.

Diseases associated with CD34 dysfunction include dermatofibrosarcoma and neurofibroma.
