Target Information
CD34 is a highly glycosylated monomeric surface protein (111–115 kDa) expressed on various stem cell populations. It functions as a stem cell marker, though its expression on human hematopoietic stem cells can be reversible. CD34 may act as a surface receptor involved in receptor-mediated endocytosis and regulation of adhesion, differentiation, and proliferation of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells.
It may serve as an adhesion molecule, mediating attachment of stem cells to the bone marrow extracellular matrix or stromal cells, and as a scaffold for lineage-specific glycans that facilitate binding to lectins. CD34 also presents carbohydrate ligands to selectins and may be phosphorylated by protein kinase C, suggesting a role in signal transduction.
Diseases associated with CD34 dysfunction include dermatofibrosarcoma and neurofibroma.
