Casein kinase I (CKI) and casein kinase II (CKII) are serine/threonine protein kinases present in all eukaryotes.
CKI family members (α, γ, ε, δ) are involved in cytoplasmic and nuclear processes such as DNA replication and repair.
CKII typically forms a tetrameric complex (α₂β₂ or αα′β₂) with catalytic (α) and regulatory (β) subunits.
CKII activity is high in proliferating and differentiating cells and phosphorylates numerous substrates, including nuclear oncoproteins, transcription factors, and DNA metabolism enzymes.
