Target Information

Beta tubulins are one of two core protein families (alpha and beta tubulins) that heterodimerize to form microtubules. Beta-III tubulin is primarily expressed in neurons and is implicated in neurogenesis, axon guidance, and maintenance. Mutations in the beta tubulin gene can cause congenital fibrosis of the extraocular muscles type 3.

Beta-III tubulin is also detected in Sertoli cells of the testis and transiently in non-neuronal embryonic tissues. Glutamate residues at the C-terminus can be glutamylated, though the function of this modification remains unclear. Tubulin phosphorylation on Ser-172 by CDK1 during cell cycle progression inhibits incorporation into microtubules.

Microtubules, composed of α/β-tubulin dimers (~55 kDa each), are essential cytoskeletal components involved in mitosis, intracellular transport, ciliary and flagellar motion, and structural support. Due to its ubiquitous expression, beta-tubulin is widely used as a loading control in protein detection assays such as Western blotting.
