Target Information
Voltage-dependent anion channel (VDAC) proteins are abundant, pore-forming proteins located in the eukaryotic mitochondrial outer membrane and also expressed in the plasma membrane. At least three different VDAC genes have been identified in vertebrates. VDAC proteins play essential roles in cellular metabolism and apoptosis, mediating the exchange of metabolites such as ADP/ATP, succinate, and citrate between the cytosol and mitochondria. VDAC1 in the plasma membrane may also regulate apoptosis via its redox activity.
