Target Information
PGP9.5 (Protein Gene Product 9.5, also known as UCH-L1, PARK5) is a neuron-specific protein distinct from neuron-specific enolase, with a molecular weight of 27 kDa. It belongs to the ubiquitin carboxyl-terminal hydrolase family (peptidase family C12) and exhibits both hydrolase and ligase activities, generating ubiquitin monomers from C-terminal adducts.
PGP9.5 is expressed in neurons and nerve fibers throughout the central and peripheral nervous systems, as well as in neuroendocrine cells, renal tubules, spermatogonia, Leydig cells, ova, and corpus luteum cells. Overexpression is associated with non-small cell lung cancer, while reduced expression is linked to Huntington’s and Alzheimer’s diseases. Due to its neuronal specificity, PGP9.5 serves as a valuable marker for neuronal studies and neurodegenerative disease research, including Parkinson’s disease.
