Target Information
Insulin is a peptide hormone secreted by beta cells of the pancreatic islets.
It regulates carbohydrate, protein, and lipid metabolism by enhancing membrane transport of glucose, amino acids, and certain ions.
It promotes glycogen storage, triglyceride formation, and synthesis of proteins and nucleic acids.
Insulin is a 51-amino acid polypeptide produced from proinsulin, which is cleaved into peptide A and B chains linked by disulfide bonds, along with one molecule of C-peptide.
Deficiency in insulin results in diabetes mellitus, a major cause of morbidity and mortality.
Insulin is also present in tumors of β-cell origin such as insulinoma.
