Target Information
The zinc transporter ZIP12 (also known as SLC39A12) is a member of the divalent ion transporter family. Zinc is an essential ion that plays key roles in cellular growth, development, and differentiation. The zinc transporter family is divided into four subfamilies: I, II, LIV-1, and gufA. ZIP12 is a multipass membrane protein belonging to the LIV-1 subfamily.
Increased ZIP12 levels have been observed during acute airway inflammation and asthma, suggesting a role in enhanced zinc uptake that may reduce inflammation. Reduced zinc content has been reported in the brains of individuals with schizophrenia, and mutations in ZIP12 have been found in some schizophrenic patients, implicating ZIP12 in the disease.
