Target Information
All cells within tissues are surrounded by an extracellular matrix (ECM) that provides shape and structure. The ECM is continuously remodeled, maintaining communication between cells. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are Zn²⁺-binding endopeptidases that degrade ECM components and modulate cell-matrix interactions. They play key roles in tissue remodeling, wound healing, angiogenesis, and tumor invasion. MMP activity is regulated by tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs), which can act as metastasis suppressor genes by blocking tumor cell invasion.
